Welcome to the Environmentally Conscious Design & Manufacturing Lab

The Environmentally-Conscious Manufacturing  is a joint initiative of the University of Toledo and the Lucas County Solid Waste Management District.

Our Primary function is to support the Lucas County Solid Waste Management District by performing Waste Analyses and Minimization Research Projects for local businesses and organizations. We can help to identify where these clients can save money by recycling materials that would otherwise be sent to a landfill. This in turn would be better for the environment and would save the district money in transportation costs and disposal of the solid waste.

The waste minimization studies are quick, professional, and informative. After an appointment is made a group of students form the lab visit the site being studied and perform an audit of the solid waste being generated. Basically all waste receptacles will be measured and its contents will be analyzed by percentages. Once all the data has been recorded a report will be generated to show how we can help reduce the amount of solid waste that gets sent to the landfill and also determine how much the site can save by selling certain waste products to recyclers.

All data taken and all reports will be kept strictly confidential. The audits are performed on a volunteer basis.
