EARTH EXPLORING EXPERIENCES

Garbo-sm.gif (1869 bytes)KT/LCB staff are available for classroom demonstrations. Below are SOME of the demonstrations that we offer, though we can design a custom presentation for your classroom. We also offer instructions for teachers who prefer to present the activities with an asterisk themselves.

*Garbo's Garbage Pizza Students learn about the composition of the waste stream: paper, glass, metal, plastic, yard waste, food waste, and other. Due to the time required to make the garbage pizza, a pizza is made beforehand. Instructions are also available for teachers to make their own garbage pizzas with students.
*The Incredible Edible Landfill Students build a model landfill out of pudding and pie crust. This is one landfill they won't mind eating at the end.
Landfill Display Model The landfill model will demonstrate how modern landfill systems today differ from the "dumps" of the past. This is a wonderful tool for helping people of all ages understand how a landfill works.
Litter Olympics This is an outdoor or gymnasium activity where students play games using litter or recyclables.
*Litter Value Bag Students work in groups to discuss the degree to which pieces of litter are harmful. They use their own value system to determine which litter is more harmful than others. Criteria can include: danger to animals, people, biodegradability, photodegradability, etc.
*Pack To Reduce Students work in groups to determine whether or not the contents of sample lunches are reusable or recyclable. Students make presentations about the lunches to the class. Other topics discussed: nutrition, cost, convenience, and litter.
Paper Pin Decorating Students decorate handmade pins made from recycled paper.
*Plastics by the Numbers Students learn to identify different plastics and distinguish between them based on their characteristics.
*Tin Can Papermaking Each student makes one sheet of recycled paper. Group size is limited to less than 30. Additional adults may be needed depending on group size.
*When They're Gone, They're Gone Students divide into countries and scavenge for natural resources. They learn how scarce resources can become and experience the disproportionate use of resources by nations.
"What is 'Keep America Beautiful'?" Learn about the history of the Keep America Beautiful system. Slide show includes information about litter, the behavioral foundation/norms regarding littering, and identifies the seven sources of litter. Presentation is performed by the director of KT/LCB and is adaptable. (20 minutes)
