Lucas County Solid Waste Management District

Statement of Mission

"...to reduce reliance on landfills and to meet or exceed the State of Ohio's 25% waste reduction
goal for residential and commercial waste and 50% of industrial waste by the year 2003."

The Lucas County Solid Waste Management District's mission is to reduce reliance on landfills and to meet or exceed the State of Ohio's 25% waste reduction goal for residential and commercial waste and 50% of industrial waste by the year 2003. In order to accomplish this, the District will employ a regional approach to solid waste management, recognizing that the District is both an importer and exporter of solid waste.

The District will encourage and support expansion of solid waste markets through economic development within the Northwest Ohio Region. The District will lead by example through the development of procurement policies for products manufactured from recycled materials. Additionally, by the end of 1999 the District will assist in the development of an office paper recycling program in all County owned and maintained offices.

The District will support voluntary programs designed to reduce reuse and recycle solid waste, implemented and operated by the private sector companies, not-for-profit and municipal agencies.

The District will emphasize education and provide technical assistance to local governmental agencies, commercial and industrial generators. Educational and technical assistance will focus on waste minimization, reuse and recycling opportunities as the most effective strategies of our integrated solid waste management programs.

The District further recognizes the importance of and is committed to aggressive enforcement action against violators of solid waste, nuisance and environmental laws as a final part of integrated solid waste management. The District is committed to utilizing the private sector businesses and agencies, citizen groups and other local political subdivisions in the development and implementation of programs and rules to accomplish its goals and protect and improve the health, safety and welfare of our community.
